Recently I purchased over 500 cedar logs from a fellow that
harvested them out of an old South Boardman Swamp here in
Northern Michigan. I agreed to pay him $2.25 a pole, he then
acquired the permits from the DNR (Department of Natural
Resources) of Michigan.
The DNR laughed when he told them what he was doing. Any way,
him and his son brought out over 500 cedar poles by hand, NO
Machinery involved. He then stacked them and I mailed him a
check for over $1100.00
I then rented a U-Haul and paid $40.00 a day plus .60 cents a
mile. I made three one hundred mile trips. The U-Haul dealer
laughed when I told him what I was doing because gas was
close to $3.00 a gallon.
When I was finished, I figured I'd have just under $3.00 a
pole in my new investment. The picture below will show you
what I acquired. I purchased around two hundred 3" to
4" poles and over 325 poles that average 6" to 8" and even
10" in dia. This standing dead cedar is already dried
by nature...what more could you ask for.
When I saw the neatly stack pile of poles I knew I had made a
good deal...and I laughed.
You see just before I agreed to the purchase I had a very
nice order that came in. One Bunk Bed, Two Twin Beds, One
Queen Bed, 2 Two Drawer Night Stands and 5--6 Drawer Chest.
All were to be made out of cedar
Here's
a picture of the Bunk Bed I'm
just finishing up.

Here's a picture of one of the 6
Drawer Cedar Chests, I only used
5 or 6 larger cedar
poles and some left over pine
poles to make this.

The bunk bed and the 6 drawer
cedar chest above will pay for
the 500 plus cedar poles and all
of the expenses, plus I'll have
money left over. And I still
have close to 480 or so poles
left.
This one order alone will be
worth over $6700.00.
A few years ago I purchased a
semi load of red pine for
$800.00 delivered. I've made
over $17,000 from that load of
wood and I'm still making money
off of it. I have no idea how
much I'll make on the cedar but
I do know I'll be making lawn
furniture as well as bedroom
sets all winter and when summer
comes...I 'll sell it and go
fishing because the bulk of the
work will be done.
This is just an example of how
anyone can supplement there
income making log furniture. For

furniture...look in the Online
